Trailblazers Resort and New Zealand Mountain Biking Centre
"New Zealand's Premier Mountain Biking Centre and Resort Facility"
Zone One of the Waipa Business & Recreation Park, Trailblazers Resort and the New Zealand Mountain Biking Centre concept is built around a public-private partnership, designed to create New Zealand's premier recreational and competitive mountain biking and multi sport facility, for use by locals, domestic and international visitors, athletes and event organisers.
The Waipa valley is home to the well utilised southern entry point to the Whakarewarewa Forest and the world class mountain bike and recreational trails that are contained within it. EROS believes that this new mountin biking resort and events facility will play a significant role in growing New Zealand's and Rotorua's tourism market, together with the positioning of Rotorua as a world-class mountain biking destination.
Proposed National Mountain Biking Centre and Trailblazers Resort Concept Drawing
The recreational destination concept has two specific areas of focus:
Area 1: New Zealand Mountain Biking Centre (NZMBC)
A publicly controlled facility that provides for
-
General public facilities, including showers, toilets, changing, locker and meeting facilities;
-
Public car parking;
-
Enhanced events management and coordination facilities, including a first aid centre and a second events specific forest access bridge;
-
Enhanced secure free and unimpeded access to the southern forest access point for the general public;
-
The development of a high performance centre designed to assist in positioning Rotorua as a globally recognised mountain biking and multi-sports destination.
Area 2: Trailblazers Resort
A privately owned operation containing a variety of complementary resort-styled facilities. The resort will cater for a wide range of guests from casual day and overnight visitors to events organisers and high performance athletes. The resort concept is based on the integration of the various complementary facilities and activities along with the location into a unique "resort destination in its own right".

This project is currently in the initial planning and feasibility stage. The design brief is focused on creating a resort facility that is world class, by blending seamlessly into the natural environment, while also providing a memorable experience. With plans for enhancement of native plantings in and around the resort, the development will transform an unattractive car parking area to a well planned and executed resort and public mountain biking facility, all on a world class scale.
Trailblazers will cater for a wide range of guests, including casual day and overnight visitors, conference and events organisers and participants as well as high performance athletes. With Whakarewarewa forest on one boundary and Rotorua just 1 km away from the resort, there will be plenty of opportunity for visitors to explore the many visitor activities that Rotorua offers. For more information about what Rotorua has to offer, see www.rotoruanz.com .
Access to the mountain bike trails is currently free to all and this will not change once the resort and mountain biking centre are built. The development of the New Zealand Mountain Biking Centre means that there will be additional facilities for everyone to utilise (showers, toilets, improved car parking etc). This facility will also assist to add to the dynamic Rotorua events product with a focus on providing infrastructure and a base for a variety of competitive and non-competitive mountain biking and multi-sport events. There will also be a focus on providing for the needs of high performance athletes within the concept to further enhance Rotorua's position as a world class mountain biking destination.
The resort will be operated by EROS subsidiary, Trailblazers Resort Ltd, in partnership with a number of specialised operators. Although the Trailblazers resort and New Zealand Mountain Biking Centre are still in the early stages of planning, feedback from the Rotorua and mountain biking community is welcome. Likewise, if you feel you or your company can contribute to what is being proposed, feel free to share your feedback with us.
